Leather boots, loafers, flats, heels at a height that works, sneakers and sandals for summer. We buy footwear on one test: could you stand in these for eight hours. If not, we do not stock them.

The labels

Django & Juliette are Australian designed and the label our customers come back for by name. The footbed is why. Mollini make leather flats, loafers and heeled boots on a last that fits properly rather than one that looks good empty. Top End is a small, well chosen range of leather loafers, ankle boots, sandals and heels. Lacoste covers the men's sneaker side with the Carnaby Evo, L001 and Lerond Pro.

Leather, and why it matters

Most of what we stock is full leather upper and lining. Leather moulds to the shape of your foot over the first few wears and then stops moving, which is why a leather shoe that is slightly firm on day one is usually right and a synthetic one that feels perfect in the box rarely stays that way.

Leather also takes a resole. A good pair of boots is worth repairing twice before you replace them, and that changes the real cost per year.

Sizing

Most of the range is in European sizing, from 36 to 42 for women. Product pages carry the equivalent New Zealand and Australian size. If you are between, size up in a boot and stay true in a flat.

Feet swell through the day. If you are measuring at home, do it in the afternoon.

Looking after them

Wipe the salt and dirt off leather before it dries in. A cream polish every few months keeps the upper from cracking. Let wet shoes dry away from a heater, because direct heat is what splits leather. Rotate two pairs rather than wearing one every day and both will outlast a single pair worn constantly.
