Dresses for the whole calendar
Midi, maxi, mini, wrap, shirt and slip. Linen and cotton for summer, knit and long sleeve for the cooler months, and a run of floor length pieces for weddings, the races and the nights that warrant it.
We buy dresses harder than any other category, because it is the one piece of clothing that has to do the most work. The same dress gets worn to a wedding in February and to the supermarket in March, and it should hold up to both.
Choosing a length
A midi sits between the knee and the ankle and is the easiest length to wear year round. Flats now, boots when it cools. A maxi reaches the floor and reads more formal, which is why most of our wedding and races stock sits there. A mini is the one to buy if you are shorter through the leg, because the proportion works without alteration.
Every product page carries the length in centimetres measured on a real garment, not a size chart estimate.
The labels
Seeking Lola, designed in Christchurch, for bohemian florals and flowing maxis. Fria The Label out of Australia for versatile pieces in lightweight draping fabric. Isle Of Mine and eb+ive for relaxed cuts in linen, cotton and knit with room to move. Federation and Huffer for the easier everyday shapes. Alongside them, our own Blank Space Label: the Caitlin, the Ruby and the Rihanna maxi, in colourways that exist nowhere else.
Fabric and fit
Linen breathes and creases, and both of those are the point. Viscose and rayon drape and hang close. Cotton poplin holds a shape. Knit dresses stretch and forgive more through the hip and bust, which makes them the safer buy if you are between sizes.
Sizing runs from 6 to 18 across most of the range, and a good part of it is bought specifically in an inclusive size run rather than stopping at a 14.
